Overstruck on a 1964 Kennedy Half, this series features obverses of iconic U.S. coinage with a common series reverse. Twelve products will be produced annually, and ONLY 250 pieces will be minted for each.

About the Mercury Dime:

Mercury Dimes are best known for their recognizable and mystifying depiction of Lady Liberty, commonly referenced as the Winged Liberty. Its design quickly became the artist’s lasting legacy.

In 1916, when the dime, quarter, and half dollar required a design update, the United States Treasury Department opened a contest for artists to submit new designs for each coin. One winner would be selected. Adolph A. Weinman was chosen as the champion artist for both The Dime and The Half Dollar based on his exciting depiction of Lady Liberty sporting a winged cap.

Weinman’s design symbolized the “Liberty of Thought.” However, the design lost its intended symbolism and became generally misinterpreted as the Roman God Mercury, the God of trade and commerce. Thus, the 1916 coins’ legacy and nickname were born and became known as Mercury Dimes.

• Obverse:  Winged Lady Liberty facing left with LIBERTY around the top, IN GOD WE TRUST on the left of her neck, and the Year and Mint Mark to the right.
• Reverse: “OVERSTRIKE SERIES” above and below the obverse image of the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar with the Intaglio Mint Logo flanked by stars on the left and right.  “1964 KENNEDY HALF,” “12.50 GRAMS,” TOTAL MINTAGE: 250,” “90% AG,” and “10% CU” around the outer circumference.

Note to collectors: Because this product is overstruck on another coin that has spent 60 years in circulation, each item will be unique and have its own characteristics. Some will be brighter than others, and the position of the devices, both overstruck and original will also differ from one to another.
