    Description

    The Pillar Dollars were some of the first coins used as currency in the Colonies and the early United States.  Everyone from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln used Spanish coins because of the lack of circulating coinage.  Although it was a foreign coin, it was legal tender in the United States until the Coinage Act of 1857 was passed.

    The Pillar Dollar, or “piece of eight” was struck at the Mexico City Mint in the 18th century and across South America under Spanish colonial rule and circulated widely in America, and across the globe.  The design features two globes, representing the Old and New worlds, between pillars, under a crown.  The Spanish arms and denomination are found on the reverse.  The Pillar Dollar is possibly the most iconic foreign coin of the 18th century.

    • Obverse: The outer rim encircled by dentils, features two globes, representing the “Old” and “New” worlds, between two pillars under a crown.
    • Reverse: The outer rim encircled with dentils, the Spanish Arms, and the denomination.

      I collect Spanish Colonial and shipwreck coins and I had a 1733 pillar dollar in XF condition and sold it. It’s the only coin I regret selling so when I saw that you came out with 1733 pillar dollars I had to buy a few and they are absolutely beautiful.
