John Dillinger was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 22, 1903. He committed his first crime in 1924 when he robbed a grocery store. He was apprehended and jailed. Shortly thereafter, he escaped, and he and his gang traveled to Chicago where he assembled one of the most organized groups of bank robbers in history. The multi-state crime spree continued until the majority of the gang was arrested, while Dillinger eluded authorities for months while receiving major media attention.
The FBI declared Dillinger “Public Enemy #1” in 1934, and in the same year, they organized a setup and Dillinger was killed outside a movie theater in Chicago, Illinois.
