George Washington Funeral Medal

The entire nation fell into mourning on December 14, 1799, with the passing of the Father of Our Country, George Washington.  There wasn’t an American alive that did not feel the loss of the great man that helped guide us from colonies to Country.  There were many innumerable celebrations held in cities, towns, and villages throughout the land for months to follow.  On February 11, 1800, in Boston, Massachusetts, more than 1,600 Masons (Washington was a Mason), marched and celebrated both the anniversary of this birth and his recent death.  Large crowds gathered for the event.  It’s thought that the Skull and Crossbones medals were made in early 1800, shortly after the passing of Washington, but before the Mason’s Parade on February 11, 1800, where both the marchers and the spectators wore the medals in tribute.

Hallmark and mintage number are laser-engraved on the edge of each piece, with CoinSafe capsule included.

• Contains 2 oz. Troy of .999 Fine Silver
• Obverse: Left-facing portrait of George Washington centered surrounded by laurel wreath.  “HE IS IN GLORY, THE WORLD IN TEARS” around the outer circumference.
• Reverse: Skull and Crossbones in lower center field, with the words, “B. FEB. 11, 1732” signifying his birthdate, and “GEN. AM. ARMIES, 1775., which is the date that George Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, June 15, 1775 to be precise.  “RE. 1783,” the year Washington retired from the position. “PRES. U.S. AM. ’89. R. ’96.” which were the years Washington was President of the United States, and “GEN. ARM. U.S. AM. .’98.  After serving as the first President of the United States, Washington was named “General of the U.S. Army.  Finally, the words “OB. D. 15. .’99.” the date of his death, December 15, 1799.
