Description

The Seal of the State of Texas was adopted through the 1845 Texas Constitution and was based on the seal of the Republic of Texas, which dates from January 25, 1839.  We have taken the liberty of adding the word “GREAT,” to emphasize our admiration for this great state.

The Gonzales Cannon was a Spanish-made, bronze artillery piece of six-pound caliber.  The cannon was the object of great contention in late September and early October of 1835 between a Mexican military detachment from Bexar and Anglo-Celtic colonist.  The cannon was requested in January of 1831 by the Gonzales colonists for protection against hostile Indians.  The cannon was delivered in March of the same year.  One of the colonists joked that the cannon was so small that when fired, about the only thing it did was start horse races.  The name “Come and Take It” refers to the motto adopted by the Texian rebels.  In October of 1835, a request was made for the return of the cannon by the Mexican military, but the Texians pointed to the cannon, which stood 200 yards away to their rear, and said, “there it is – come and take it.”  The disagreement produced the battle of Gonzales, considered to be the first battle of the Texas Revolution.
